Ohioans Protest Keystone Pipeline (ContributorNetwork)

A handful of protestors attempted to influence the public's view on the importance of climate change and the Keystone oil pipeline this week, according to the Associated Press. Approximately 40 people dressed in dark clothing and carrying a homemade mock pipeline model and cut-out resemblance of Speaker of the House John Boehner staged a protest in front of the elected official's Cincinnati area office.

Environmental organizer Danny Berchenko stated the protest was held to send a message to Representative Boehner and Congress that Americans do not support the proposed pipeline, says the AP. The Energy Action Coalition, 350.0rg and Occupy Cincinnati were co-organizers of the event. The pipeline is expected to create 20,000 jobs.

Ohioans shared their thoughts on the pipeline and the protest via instant messaging, email, Twitter and in-person interviews.

* "The loud and clear message the group tried to send garnered only 40 protestors from such a large coalition. The pipeline will create much needed good paying jobs in the United States. Natural gas is far greener than coal and will set us on the path to energy independence." -- Dale Talbert, transportation company supervisor, Cincinnati.

* "If operated and monitored responsibly the pipeline and shale drilling in Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia can take our economy from struggling to prosperous. Hydraulic fracturing might not be 100 percent earth friendly but it is a far cleaner process than used to unearth coal and oil." -- Abby Whittier, dress shop operator, Bay Village.

* "The protests will continue until the money-hungry Republicans realize that we are just not going to take it anymore. Tax cuts for the rich and destroying our environmental resources is just not acceptable. We need to focus on climate change and real green industry development in America." -- Rashawna Eastman, Ohio State University graduate student, Columbus.

* "I am glad the bill passed because it has a payroll tax cut that may protect jobs at small businesses. I support the growing natural gas industry because it will bring lasting jobs, but am a bit concerned about the safety of pipelines. The one that blew up in the Glouster area was only a few miles from us. That was scary. Safety and proper maintenance of the pipeline must be a top priority." -- Chet Nash, retired construction foreman, Jacksonville.

* "Shale drilling and fracking will bring destruction in Ohio and any state foolish enough to believe what the Republicans are trying to get us to believe. Jobs are not worth the ruination of our public forests and water supply. There will not be as many jobs as what the Republican leaders are saying either. We do not need a pipeline running anywhere near or through our state." -- Caroline Walters, community organizer, Mansfield.
