Since former Gen. Ricardo Sanchez has withdrawn from the race to fill the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Kay Bailey Hutchison, it looks like two men will be the top competitors for the Democratic nomination.
Those men, according to the Houston Chronicle, are former Texas Rep. and House Public Education Chairman Paul Sadler and Houston Attorney Jason Gibson. There are three minor candidates also running for the seat. The winner will face the winner of the Republican nomination contest in the fall, either Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst, former Texas Solicitor General Ted Cruz, former Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert or former ESPN sportscaster Craig James.
Who is Paul Sadler?
Paul Sadler served in the Texas House of Representatives from 1991 through 2003, representing the Henderson region of East Texas. Sadler is currently the executive of The Wind Coalition, which promotes wind power as an alternative energy source. Sadler touts his experience in the Texas House working on education reform. His position with the Wind Coalition burnishes his credentials on energy policy.
Who is Jason Gibson?
Jason Gibson is a Houston consumer fraud attorney and is the president of the Houston Trial Lawyers Association. He is the cofounder of the Gibson Law Firm which specializes in representing people who believe they have been victimized by defective drugs, insurance abuse, and other consumer scams.
What are Sadler's and Gibson's campaign issues?
So far neither has a campaign website nor have they articulated a set of issues, besides boilerplate populism. Gibson, in his announcement, touted a desire for common sense government and a level playing field for hard working citizens. Sadler expressed the desire to end gridlock in Washington and to put Texas above everything else. He is also in favor of passing legislation that will improve the lives and education of Texans, especially the children. On illegal immigration, Sadler is both in favor of securing the border and of providing what he termed a clear path to citizenship for illegal aliens.
What is the bottom line?
Sadler is considered to have the edge in the nomination fight since he is an experienced politician, having served for 12 years in the Texas Legislature. The winner of the Democratic nomination will have an uphill battle to win the seat in the general election. The last Democrat to win a statewide office in Texas was Dan Morales in 1994 when he won re-election as state attorney general. The Republicans will deploy a potent and experienced politician, either Dewhurst or Cruz, who most suggest will be tough to beat.
