Hornets select Davis with No. 1 pick in NBA draft
NEWARK, N.J. (AP) ? Best in the country and No. 1 and 2 in the NBA draft. The celebration goes on for Kentucky's kids.
The Wildcats became the first school to have the top two picks and tied a record with six players taken overall Thursday night.
After the New Orleans Hornets made the long-expected selection of forward Anthony Davis with the first pick, Charlotte followed by taking fellow freshman Michael Kidd-Gilchrist.
"It's crazy," Davis said. "Michael is a great player. We have two down and four more to go. Hopefully, all of them will go in the first round."
They didn't, the only disappointment for the Wildcats. They settled for four in the first round and a tie with North Carolina, which won the race to four picks ? all in the top 17 selections.
Harrison Barnes (No. 7, Golden State), Kendall Marshall (No. 13, Phoenix), John Henson (No. 14, Milwaukee) and Tyler Zeller (No. 17, Dallas) all went between Kidd-Gilchrist and the next Kentucky player, Terrence Jones at No. 18 to Houston.
Zeller's rights were later traded to Cleveland for a package that included No. 24 pick Jared Cunningham of Oregon State.
Otherwise, it was the Wildcats' night, starting with a hug between Davis and Kidd-Gilchrist after the first selection.
"My arm was shaking and my hands were sweaty. Got up and hugged Michael, my best friend, wanted to hug him for a minute," Davis said. "When my name got called, wanted to make sure he stayed close."

"Like I said, at Kentucky we had it all the time, especially the six who played, we had the spotlight all the time," Davis said. "I think it really prepared me."
Charlotte, coming off a 7-59 season and the worst winning percentage in NBA history, had been open to moving the No. 2 pick if it found the right deal. Instead, Michael Jordan's team went with Kidd-Gilchrist, whose selection by the Bobcats was loudly cheered, a sharp contrast from the boos Stern received when coming out to announce the picks.
The new Charlotte swingman played in high school at nearby St. Patrick's in Elizabeth, N.J., and fans chanted "MKG! MKG!" as he walked off the stage. Though he and Davis talked before the draft, they didn't discuss the history the Wildcats were about to make.
"No. I was shocked at first," Kidd-Gilchrist said. "I was shocked. But no, we didn't. We didn't at all."
Florida's Bradley Beal went third to Washington, making it three SEC freshman in the first three picks. Cleveland followed with the surprisingly early pick of Syracuse sixth man Dion Waiters at No. 4.
Thomas Robinson of Kansas, who hoped to go second, fell to Sacramento at No. 5. Portland took Weber State's Damian Lillard at No. 6 with its first of two lottery picks, and Barnes was taken seventh by Golden State.
After Washington's Terrence Ross went to Toronto and Connecticut's Andre Drummond to Detroit, the Hornets rounded out the top 10 by taking Duke guard Austin Rivers with a pick they acquired in the Paul trade. Rivers hugged his father, Boston coach Doc Rivers, who came to be with his family instead of with the Celtics, who owned two later first-round picks.
Davis was the only clear-cut pick entering the draft, and there were some early surprises. Players such as Waiters and Ross went higher than expected, while Robinson dropped to the Kings.
"I really didn't know where I was going to end up at, but it is a bit of a surprise," he said, tearing up when talking about his difficult journey that included the deaths of multiple family members in college. "I didn't work out for Sacramento at all, I probably talked to them about once. But I'm here, so I'm meant to be here."
Houston took Jeremy Lamb of Connecticut at No. 12 with its first of three top-20 picks. But the Rockets, who also had the Nos. 16 and 18 picks, were hoping not to use all of them, instead packaging them for an established player after their pursuit of the Lakers' Pau Gasol fell through last year.
The Rockets tabbed Iowa State's Royce White at No. 16 and Terrence Jones two picks later.
Jared Sullinger, once considered a top-10 pick, ended up in a draft free-fall over concerns with his back but was finally taken at No. 21 by Boston. The Celtics followed with Fab Melo of Syracuse, giving them two potential replacements if Kevin Garnett doesn't return.

More than half those graduating from college each year are women. The percentage of law degrees earned by females climbed from 7 percent in 1972 to about 47 percent in 2011. Likewise, far more women are earning advanced degrees in business and medicine.
Despite the gains, experts say some gender divides are still apparent, especially with participation in the STEM fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
Long before women pick a college major or enter the workforce, their K-12 education sets the stage in level of interest, confidence, and achievement in STEM. There, data suggest, some barriers continue to block girls. Heavy gender imbalances persist as well in some areas of career and technical education, from cosmetology to automotive mechanics.
"Broadly speaking, girls and women have made great strides in education," said Lara S. Kaufmann, a senior counsel at the National Women's Law Center in Washington. "The days when girls were told blatantly that they can't take advanced math are over. ... But there are still challenges to equity."
In precollegiate education, the issue is more evident in some STEM disciplines than others.
Recent Advanced Placement data show representation of the sexes to be about the same ? or even higher for girls ? in certain courses, but some show striking gender contrasts.
For the class of 2011, boys dominated the computer-science course, representing 80 percent of test-takers, as well as the three AP physics courses. Boys accounted for 77 percent of those taking the physics exam for electricity and magnetism and 74 percent of mechanics exams. Also, 59 percent of those taking Calculus BC, the more advanced of two AP courses offered in the subject, were male.
Moreover, data from the AP and the National Assessment of Educational Progress indicate continued achievement gaps between boys and girls in STEM fields, especially science.
At a conference last month in Chicago, Russlynn H. Ali, the U.S. Department of Education's assistant secretary for civil rights, said she sees work to be done at the secondary level.
"Girls are underrepresented ... in those taking AP physics," she said, also noting disparities in math. "We want to study why that is. Obviously, there is ... recruitment that happens on AP. There is a kind of counseling that happens."
In fact, the office for civil rights is investigating a Colorado district to determine whether girls have fair and equitable access to AP math and science, and whether the district adequately prepares them in elementary and middle school for such courses.
Meanwhile, Title IX's restrictions on single-sex education continue to spark debate. The American Civil Liberties Union in May sent "cease and desist" letters to districts in six states, claiming their single-sex programs may violate Title IX. The Education Department's revision of Title IX regulations in 2006 was seen as making it easier for districts to offer single-sex classes.

Developments in British phone-hacking scandal
The Wall Street Journal is reporting that on Thursday, News Corp. is expected to announce that the board of directors has approved a plan to split the global media conglomerate into two separate companies, one holding its newspaper business and another its entertainment operations.
News Corp. had said Tuesday that it was considering such a move. It comes as Britain's communications regulator enters the final stages of its review of whether BSkyB is "fit and proper" to hold a broadcast license amid a phone-hacking scandal involving British newspaper owned by News Corp.
News Corp., which is controlled by Rupert Murdoch, had no comment on the Journal report. The Journal is News Corp.'s flagship newspaper.
Here are key developments in that scandal:
November 2005: News of the World royal reporter Clive Goodman writes story saying Prince William has a knee injury. Buckingham Palace complaint prompts police inquiry.
August 2006: Goodman arrested along with private investigator Glenn Mulcaire for suspected hacking into voicemails of royal officials.
January 2007: Goodman jailed for four months; Mulcaire given six-month sentence. News of the World editor Andy Coulson resigns but insists he had not known about the hacking.
May 2007: Conservative Party leader David Cameron taps Coulson to be his media adviser.
July 2009: Coulson tells parliamentary committee he never "condoned use of phone hacking."
September 2009: Rebekah Brooks, former editor of the News of the World and its sister paper The Sun, named chief executive of News International, News Corp.'s British arm.
February 2010: Parliamentary committee finds no evidence that Coulson knew about phone hacking but states it's "inconceivable" that no one apart from royal correspondent Goodman knew about it.
May 2010: Cameron becomes prime minister; Coulson named communications chief.
Jan. 14, 2011: British police reopen investigation into phone-hacking charges against News of the World.
Jan. 21: Coulson resigns from Cameron's office amid claims he had sanctioned phone hacking. Coulson continues to deny any wrongdoing or any knowledge of hacking.
April 5: Police arrest two journalists, including Ian Edmondson, the tabloid's former news editor, on suspicion of intercepting voicemails. More than a dozen arrests of journalists and some police would follow in the coming months as inquiries into phone hacking and police corruption continued.
April 8: News of the World admits it was responsible for phone hacking and says it will set up a compensation plan to deal with claims fairly and efficiently. It was the newspaper's first admission of liability.
April 15: Judge allows actress Sienna Miller and three others to proceed with lawsuits over phone hacking against the newspaper despite an ongoing criminal investigation.
May 13: Miller's lawyer says lawsuit settled for 100,000 pounds (about $165,000 at the time). Since then, News International has reached settlements with several others to avoid trials.
June 30: British regulators give News Corp. tentative approval to take full control of satellite broadcaster British Sky Broadcasting.
July 4: The Guardian newspaper reports that News of the World journalists hacked into voicemails left for murdered schoolgirl Milly Dowler, and gave her parents and police false hope she was alive by deleting messages when the mailbox became full.

July 8: Coulson and two other men are arrested in the widening police inquiry.

July 19: Rupert Murdoch appears at a parliamentary hearing alongside his son James and says he was humbled and ashamed, but accepted no responsibility for wrongdoing. James Murdoch, executive chairman of the British newspaper unit, apologizes for the scandal. June 18: News Corp. says former U.S. Assistant Attorney General Joel Klein is relinquishing his role as head of the company's internal probe into phone hacking. He surrenders the duties to Gerson Zweifach, a company lawyer. News Corp. said the move allows Klein to return to his full-time job running its education division.
June 22: Brooks is granted bail until Sept. 26 as she awaits trial on charges of attempting to cover up evidence.
Tuesday: News Corp. says it is considering splitting into two publicly traded companies. The move comes as Britain's communications regulator enters the final stages of its review of whether BSkyB is "fit and proper" to hold a broadcast license.
Wednesday: The Wall Street Journal, which is News Corp.'s flagship newspaper, reports that the company's board of directors has approved a plan that calls for splitting the global media conglomerate into two separate companies, one holding its newspaper business and another its entertainment operations.

Genetic heart diseases may be responsible for unexplained stillbirths
ScienceDaily (June 25, 2012) ? Genetic researchers have made an important step towards resolving the mystery of the causes of intrauterine fetal demise (IUFD), or stillbirth, where a baby dies in the womb after the 14th week of gestation. IUFD is responsible for 60% of perinatal mortality and occurs in about one in every two hundred pregnancies in Europe. Up to half of these stillbirths are unexplained. Now scientists from Italy, Germany, and the US have found that up to 8% [1] of these unexplained deaths may be caused by specific genetic heart conditions.
Ms Alice Ghidoni, a PhD student at the University of Pavia, Italy, will tell the annual conference of the European Society of Human Genetics June 26 that the group's research shows for the first time that cardiac channelopathies, hereditary diseases in which the heartbeat rhythm is disturbed, were likely to have played a causative role in some IUFD deaths . "Since we knew that 10-15% of sudden infant death syndrome cases carry genetic variants associated with long QT syndrome or Brugada syndrome[2], we decided to investigate whether sudden death due to malignant arrhythmias could underlie some cases of IUFD as well," she will explain.
The researchers carried out molecular screening of stillborn fetuses where the cause of death remained unexplained after extensive post-mortem investigation. Informed consent was obtained from the parents. They looked for mutations of three genes, two of them involved in long QT and one in both long QT and Brugada syndromes, and found three disease-causing variants that were present in the IUFD cases, but absent in more than 1000 ethnically-matched controls.
Genetic testing is still quite rare in IUFD, but it is an important tool for uncovering the causes of unexplained death, says Ms Ghidoni. "The most common causes of fetal death are chromosomal abnormalities, infections, fetal-maternal haemorrhages, and maternal diseases," she says. "Most of these are relatively easy to identify. Since genetic screening is a long, expensive and complicated procedure, currently it is not routinely performed in cases where an autopsy has not shown the cause of death. However, such molecular investigation could be very useful to identify specific genetic defects occurring in the family, so that future pregnancies can be monitored with close clinical follow-up. In some cases, life-saving treatment could be given."
Identification of a fetus with a gene mutation for a cardiac channelopathy allows for treatment for the mother with drugs such as beta-blockers, the same treatment that is given to adults who have been identified with long QT syndrome.
Because the research was carried out by scientists from a number of different centres and countries, it was not possible to systematically collect parental DNA. However, as part of the planned expansion of the investigation, the researchers now intend to enlarge the study population further and to collect DNA from all family members. Cardiac channelopathies run in families, so genetic testing will be able to identify not just those parents who are at risk of an affected pregnancy, but also all family members who may be unaware that they have a potentially fatal heart condition.
"We have also identified new candidate genes which may be linked to cardiac channelopathies, and we will investigate them in our follow-up work," says Ms Ghidoni. "Our current work shows that nearly 3% of IUFDs may be caused by a genetic variant with a cardiac disease-causing role, and another 5% by a variant that may predispose to disease. We believe that the new candidate genes may enlarge this field yet further. This is vitally important because we can then depict a clear picture of arrhythmic risk in perinatal life, both before and after birth.
"We believe that it is very important to increase knowledge of these genetic disorders among paediatric cardiologists and gynaecologists and that genetic testing should be included in post-mortem analysis. Many more lives can be saved if there is sufficient awareness of these devastating conditions among healthcare professionals, as well as among the affected families who in many cases have already suffered enough," Ms Ghidoni will conclude.

They are best known for causing sudden unexplained death in young adults. While these syndromes can be identified through complete and accurate clinical evaluation and genetic testing, in most cases it is not until a sudden death has occurred that their existence is suspected.

Mars has snowflakes, but they are tiny, study finds
By analyzing how much light the clouds that hang over the red planet reflect, scientists found its snowflakes, which are made of CO2 instead of water, are mere thousandths of a millimeter across.?
Researchers have calculated that carbon dioxide snow particles on Mars are roughly the size of a human red blood cell. Martian snow is depicted in this artist's rendering as a mist or fog that eventually settles to the surface.

Researchers analyzed observations made by two?Mars-orbiting spacecraft to calculate the size of snowflakes on the Red Planet, which are composed of carbon dioxide rather than water.
"These are very fine particles, not big flakes," study co-author Kerri Cahoy, of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, said in a statement. An astronaut standing among snow particles falling onto the Martian surface "would probably see it as a fog, because they?re so small," Cahoy added.

Clouds of snowhang above Mars during the planet's winter, covering its poles and reaching about halfway to the equator. The researchers studied observations of these clouds made over the last decade or so by two NASA spacecraft, the Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) and the?Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter?(MRO).
For example, the team looked at temperature and pressure profiles taken by MRO to determine where and when conditions would allow carbon dioxide snow particles to form. They also analyzed measurements from MGS' laser altimeter, which gauged the topography of Mars by timing how long laser pulses took to bounce back from the planet's surface. Occasionally, the laser beam returned faster than anticipated, after ricocheting off?cloud?particles in the Martian atmosphere.
By analyzing how much light these clouds reflected, the researchers were able to calculate the density of carbon dioxide in each one. They figured out the total mass of snow particles hovering above Mars' poles by examining earlier measurements of tiny, seasonal shifts in the planet's gravitational field.
The team put all of this information together to calculate the number and size of individual snow particles in the polar clouds at various times. The scientists found that particle size differed from pole to pole, with flakes in the north measuring between 8 to 22 microns and those in the south just 4 to 13 microns.
Both of these size ranges are microscopic, about comparable to the width of a human red blood cell, the researches said.
?For the first time, using only spacecraft data, we really revealed this phenomenon on Mars," said lead author Renyu Hu, a grad student at MIT.
The results of the study will be published in an upcoming issue of the Journal of Geophysical Research.
Learning from the size of snow
Snowflakes require a kernel of some sort around which to form ? a speck of dust, for example. So knowing the size of Martian snowflakes may help researchers better understand the properties and behavior of dust in the Red Planet's atmosphere, Hu said.
"What kinds of dust do you need to have this kind of condensation?" he said. "Do you need tiny dust particles? Do you need a water coating around that dust to facilitate cloud formation?"
Further, Martian snow may affect how heat is distributed around Mars, reflecting sunlight in various ways depending on the size of each particle.
"They could be completely different in their contribution to the energy budget of the planet," Hu says. ?These datasets could be used to study many problems."?

ASUNCION, Paraguay (AP) ? Ousted Paraguayan President Fernando Lugo fought back Sunday against the politicians who engineered his dismissal, setting up an alternative government and pledging to upstage Paraguay's new leaders at an upcoming regional summit.
Lugo's new stance marked a dramatic about-face from just two days earlier when it seemed he would go meekly into retirement after the country's Congress overwhelmingly voted to impeach him.
Since then, Lugo has received a flood of support from South American nations, including the Mercosur trade bloc, which suspended Paraguay from taking part in a summit set to start Monday in Mendoza, Argentina.
Mercosur nations expressed "their most energetic condemnation of the rupture of democratic order" in Paraguay, read a joint statement issued by the Argentine Foreign Ministry.
Meanwhile, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said his government will cut off fuel sales to the poor South American country. Venezuela had become a key supplier to Paraguay as Chavez built close ties with Lugo, a moderate leftist.
The developments set back efforts by newly sworn-in President Federico Franco, who over the weekend mounted efforts to justify Lugo's removal and fend off criticism from regional leaders calling the action an institutional coup.
Earlier Sunday, Franco said newly appointed Foreign Minister Jose Felix Fernandez would represent Paraguay at the Mendoza summit, with heads of state gathering there on Thursday.
"He will take charge of seeking to solve the discrepancies with countries that are our neighbors and friends," Franco said after attending Sunday Mass. There was no immediate comment from his government after Paraguay's suspension.
Lugo also said he will attend the summit and even hand over the rotating presidency of another regional bloc, Unasur, to Peru next week, months before it is due to switch in November.
"I will not collaborate with Franco's government because it is bogus. It has no legitimacy," Lugo said. Earlier he denounced his ouster as a "parliamentary coup."
His former Cabinet ministers announced that they were establishing a parallel government to continue Lugo's policies and would meet on matters of state Monday.
"President Lugo will be with his ministers to take decisions and then inform what those determinations were," said Augusto Dos Santos, Lugo's minister of social communication.
Last week Lugo said he would respect the outcome of his impeachment proceedings. After his rapid trial and conviction in the Senate on Friday, he disappeared from sight, and an aide said he was focused on moving his things out of the presidential palace.
But he came out swinging shortly after midnight Sunday, showing up at an emotional demonstration where he told protesters his truncated presidency was targeted because he tried to help the South American nation's poor majority. Asked whether he had any hope of retaking office, Lugo exhorted his followers to remain peaceful but suggested that national and international clamor could lead Paraguayan lawmakers to reverse his impeachment.
"In politics, anything is possible," Lugo said.
He also said he agreed to respect the outcome of a process he considered illegitimate at the behest of Roman Catholic bishops in order to avoid bloodshed.
A second "open-microphone" protest took place Sunday and was still going strong well after nightfall with a larger crowd of around 1,000 watching Paraguayans take turns stepping up to speak their mind. At times the protest took on the flavor of a variety show, as passionate orators and folksingers shared the stage with folkloric dancers and moonwalking Michael Jackson impersonators.
All three other full Mercosur members have reacted with alarm to Lugo's removal, denouncing the fact that the Senate's impeachment trial lasted just five hours, giving the president little time to mount a defense. Brazil and Argentina announced they were calling their ambassadors home and Uruguay expressed concern.
Chavez also announced that Venezuela was pulling its envoy and would not recognize a Franco government, calling Lugo's ouster a "coup."
Chavez's decision to cut oil shipments could hurt Paraguay, which has received increasing quantities of Venezuelan oil since 2004. Paraguay currently owes Venezuela's state oil company Petroleos de Venezuela SA nearly $300 million, out of about $400 million in total debts to oil suppliers.
Paraguay's new government downplayed the Argentine announcement, noting that the last ambassador, Rafael Roma, had already left three months ago after finishing his diplomatic assignment.
Lugo was elected four years ago, ending 61 years of rule by the Colorado Party, on promises of agrarian reform to help the country's many poor and landless people, but his allies increasingly turned against him in recent years.
Ultimately, a deadly clash this month between police and landless protesters cost Lugo all but a handful of votes in both legislative houses.
Police were attempting to evict about 150 farmers from a remote forest reserve that is part of a large estate. Six police officers, including the brother of Lugo's chief of security, and 11 farmers died in the clash.
Lugo's opponents blamed the president. Advocates for the farmers say the landowner, a Colorado Party politician, had used his influence to get the land from the state decades ago, and say it should have been put to use for land reform.
The president also was tried on four other accusations, including that he improperly allowed leftist parties to hold a political meeting in an army base in 2009; that he let about 3,000 squatters illegally invade a large Brazilian-owned soybean farm; that his government failed to capture members of a guerrilla group, and that he signed an international protocol without properly submitting it to Congress for approval.
Franco is set to serve out the rest of Lugo's term, which ends in August 2013. His government has been recognized by Germany, Canada and Spain.
Franco said Fernandez, the foreign minister, would try to win back the support of Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay.
"There was no break with democracy here. The transition of power through political trial is established in the national constitution," Franco said.
The U.S. State Department has urged "all Paraguayans to act peacefully, with calm and responsibility, in the spirit of Paraguay's democratic principles." It has not said whether the U.S. will recognize the new government.

I have the free Dave Ramsey app on my phone, which is basically just a collection of short segments from his radio show, updated almost daily. A few days ago there was a segment, filed under the category Best of Dave, called ?Parents, Step Up!? ?The whole segment was a 10-minute rant by Dave about how the reason that student loan debt is getting so out of control in this country is that parents today are quitting parenting once their kids are teenagers and aren?t guiding them into good financial decisions regarding college. This quote, which came towards the beginning of the segment, pretty much encapsulates the whole 10 minutes:
?I have decided ? that the number one reason for student loan debt ? [is] parents who will not step into their child?s life ? and say, hello, you?re 17, you are not doing this.?
As usual when it comes to Dave, I have mixed feelings about this whole line of thinking. On the one hand, yes, 17-year-olds, even very smart 17-year-olds, usually know absolutely nothing about money and it is a parent?s job to step in and explain what it will be like to pay back $100,000 in student loans. My parents did ? they explained that they were willing to pay X amount towards my undergraduate education and if I decided to go to a school that cost more than that amount, I?d be taking out loans. Then my dad went online and told me how much I?d be paying per month if I decided to go to certain schools and had to borrow certain amounts. Ultimately, I decided not to take out those loans (my student loans are from graduate school) and I went to a very good state school, had a wonderful college experience, got a good job, and haven?t regretted the decision at all.
But I think the story I just told illustrates the inherent flaw in what Dave was ranting about. My parents are not idiots with money (a lot of parents are), they cared about me (a lot of parents don?t), and they recognized that this was not a decision that I was equipped to make as a starry-eyed 17-year-old (again, a lot of parents don?t). In other words, not everyone is in the position to be taking advice from their parents about college and/or money. Now to be fair, I don?t think that Dave was talking about the parents who don?t care about their kids, I think he was addressing the parents who won?t say ?no? to their kids ? which is definitely a problem, albeit a different one. But it?s still a gross oversimplification to say that parents? failures to provide financial guidance is the ?number one? reason that student loan debt is out of control in the U.S.

So, in a competitive strike against Google, Apple announced at its Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) on June 11 that it is dropping Google Maps from iOS 6 this fall in favor of its own mapping services. Amsterdam-based navigation-system maker TomTom has signed a global agreement with Apple for developing maps and related information.
By launching its own mapping service and leaving behind Google Maps, Apple is ?moving away from any type of relationship with Google,? said Kenneth Wisnefski, founder and CEO of WebiMax, which specializes in online, social and mobile marketing. ?It signals that they have started to clearly define each other more as competitors whereas before they could be viewed as complementary.?
Apple dropping Google Maps from iOS 6 will be of concern to some Android app developers. ?For many Android developers who also target iOS (which sees the majority of the most popular apps), this might have an effect because the map services may now vary across devices,? said IDC analyst and program director Al Hilwa. ?However, not all apps use maps, and so this is of limited effect.?
Forrester Research analyst Charles Golvin thinks the news of Apple dropping Google Maps from iOS 6 could influence Android app developers to begin developing for iOS. ?The new Maps interfaces from Apple may provide additional incentive for them to develop for iOS as Apple looks to create a new revenue stream from those APIs,? he said.
While dropping Google Maps is strategically significant for Apple, mobile industry analysts say developers will continue the trend of developing cross-platform apps that support both Android and iOS, albeit more often for iOS. Even though it takes some extra energy, developers will continue to develop cross-platform because doing so maximizes their app sales, plus app availability and quality is what consumers look at when choosing their phones.

College Students Open New Grocery Delivery Business
Williamsville, N.Y. - They're your typical college students with dreams and aspirations. Eric Bress and Robert Purkiss are not only childhood friends, but are now brand new business partners.
This week they launched Grocery Express Buffalo, a service where customers can place their grocery shopping list on their website.
Bress told 2 On Your Side that they will not only do the shopping for you, they will also deliver it to your door.?
"It's been very successful in other areas of the country and we want to test it out here. We think it would be great for this area," said Bress.
Wal-Mart is one such store that offers "grocery to go service," but it's not available yet in Western New York. Grocery Express Buffalo actually offers something unique compared to others.
"You can select the exact time you want your delivery which is unique from other places where there's some leeway in the time," said Bress.
Before attending Penn State, Bress took an entrepreneurial class in high school. He said this same business venture was his actual final project. A few weeks ago he shared this idea with Purtkiss who attends U-B.
"It give me the experience, and its good fun to do. We're having a great time doing it and I really like the feeling of being an entrepreneur," said Purkiss.
With three deliveries under their belt so far, the new partners are trying to build their business by marketing themselves to those who they feel are a forgotten customer base.
Bress elaborated by saying, "We think our main group of customers is the elderly. We've gone around actually to a lot of retirement homes and are trying to get possibly like a drop box system where the residents can write in their orders."
Orders Purkiss said will meet the highest of standards.
"If it's something I'll put in my fridge at home, and will eat myself then I'll choose one 10-times better than that and give it to the customer," said Purkiss.
The new partners say they will continue run their business when they both return back to school in the fall. Their immediate plan is trying to expand their business, hire some employees, and look for an office.
